Dr. Stanley Turecki is a child, adolescent, family and adult psychiatrist, certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is in private practice in New York City and is on the staff of Lenox Hill Hospital and Beth Israel Medical Center. He lectures frequently to both parents and professionals, and is the author of two books, The Difficult Child and Normal Children Have Problems, Too. He is also the recipient of the Physician Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

Psychiatric practice Dr. Turecki’s private practice includes the treatment of children, adolescents, families and adults. Couples therapy and group therapy are also offered. He often works with the families of troubled children and adolescents. He strongly believes that parents are the most powerful agents for change when a child needs help. He frequently sees children with special needs, and patients of all ages with ADHD, depression or anxiety. Dr. Turecki tends to be conservative about diagnosing serious psychiatric illness, particularly in young children. He will prescribe medication when appropriate but may use lower doses than some of his colleagues. For some patients, medication and practical advice are not enough. In such cases Dr. Turecki will recommend psychotherapy. His approach and philosophy are founded on a respect for individual differences.

Working with parents Dr. Turecki’s experience with his youngest daughter, who was extremely hard to raise as a child, sparked his interest and research in the then-emerging field of Temperament, which led to his first book and his growing reputation as a doctor who could help the parents of young, temperamentally difficult children. As a result he founded the Difficult Child Program at Beth Israel Medical Center, and later, the Difficult Child Center in Manhattan, which is now incorporated in his private practice.

Recognized expertise Dr. Turecki has often lectured at the American Academy of Pediatrics meetings, was a featured speaker with the T. Berry Brazelton National Seminar Series, and has given a workshop at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Turecki is listed by New York Magazine as one of the “Best Doctors in New York” and has served on the Board of Advisors of Parents Magazine. He has often appeared on national television, including multiple appearances on Oprah Winfrey, Good Morning America, and the Today Show. 20/20 devoted a whole segment to Dr. Turecki and his work. He has also been quoted in the print media, including The New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, and New York Magazine, as well as many parenting magazines.
